Intern for Earth Gauge®
Nature of Position: The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF, www.neefusa.org), a national leader in building public environmental literacy, is seeking an intern for Earth Gauge (www.earthgauge.net), an exciting program developed in partnership with the American Meteorological Society. Earth Gauge is designed to make it easy for weathercasters to talk about environmental and climate topics as they relate to the local forecast in US media markets by providing weekly, tailored environmental facts and viewer tips for use on-air, online and in community outreach activities. Currently, the service reaches over 200 weathercasters, journalists and radio broadcasters in 117 cities, The Weather Channel and AccuWeather – and it continues to expand. The successful candidate will work at one of Washingtonian Magazine’s “50 Best Places to Work” (2009) in a dynamic and expanding field with an experienced professional.
Responsibilities: The Earth Gauge intern will develop weather-related tips and information for distribution to weathercasters in the Mississippi River Basin, focused on nitrogen and phosphorus pollution.
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Research and write Earth Gauge tips on nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Mississippi River Basin, including information sources/causes of water pollution and tips for the public to protect water quality in their communities.
- Work with the Earth Gauge staff and partners at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review and distribute messages to weathercasters, journalists, radio broadcasters, educators and other interested parties.
- Track media (news stories, photos) on Harmful Algal Blooms.
- Track social media (Twitter, Facebook) on water pollution and Harmful Algal Blooms; create content on these topics for the @earthgauge Twitter account and the Earth Gauge Facebook page.
- Assist with updates to the Earth Gauge website and special projects as needed.
The ideal candidate will have:
A background and strong interest in environmental science, meteorology/atmospheric sciences or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex science concepts into understandable terms that can be relayed to the public.
- Strong internet and literature research skills; strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook programs. Experience with WordPress a plus, but not required.
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a small program team.
- Good sense of humor.
This is a paid position at $10.00 per hour.
Term: Three months, beginning in February 2012. Start date is flexible. Position will be part time (up to 20 hours per week); hours are flexible within organization operating hours (9:00a – 5:00p).
To Apply: Please send resume, cover letter and writing sample to hr@neefusa.org. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. No phone calls, please.
