About the National Environmental Education Foundation

History

Chartered by Congress in 1990 to advance environmental knowledge and action, our ultimate goal is to promote life-long environmental literacy in the general public.

Our strategy is to reach the public through a powerful network of trusted professionals who can help Americans make everyday choices for a healthy life and healthy environment.

Working with a network of health professionals, weathercasters, public land managers, business executives and teachers our programs reach hundreds of thousands of households and translate into direct actions, saving millions of dollars as well as reducing energy use, protecting nature, and improving the health of thousands of children.

Trusted Professionals

The NEEF model relies upon experts in the field to amplify important environmental messages to the public. “Trusted professionals” are the teachers, meteorologists, business leaders, public land managers and medical professionals who interact on a daily basis with the public.

By providing information to these groups of experts, a small organization can make a significant impact encouraging positive action among every sector of the population.

  • Meteorologists convey environmental messages to their viewers tied to local forecasts through the Earth Gauge program.
  • Health professionals increase their environmental knowledge and convey it to pediatric patients and their families through the Health and Environment Program.
  • Public land managers communicate the importance of protecting our natural resources and lands and engage individuals in volunteering through National Public Lands Day.
  • Business leaders share best employee, environmental education practices to improve the environment – and their bottom line – through the Business and Environment Program.
  • High school teachers around the country exchange resources, ideas and success stories for integrating environmental content into every day lesson plans through Classroom Earth. High school students find other environmentally minded teens, explore options for higher education and careers and hear success stories from peers at Planet Connect..
  • Educators get resources and find best practices for a week-long celebration of environmental education through NEEF’s National Environmental Education Week.
