NEEF’s partnership with The Weather Channel exemplifies how a long-term commitment to find common ground and build trust can lead to concrete results.
In 2007, when public opinion polls indicated that teens were increasingly interested in “green” issues and careers, there were surprisingly few environmental education programs focused on high schools. We wanted to learn more about why this shortage existed, so we talked to high school teachers nationwide. They told us that they needed help getting the right environmental education resources, materials that would be up-to-date, easily accessible and relevant to their students.
Leveraging Change and Providing "Knowledge to Live By"
The National Environmental Education Foundation plays a critical role in bringing together key players to strengthen environmental education for Americans of every age.
Our philosophy is simple: reach people who reach people, with a series of programs supporting, sustaining and enhancing appreciation for the natural world and environmental education.
“NEEF has been phenomenal. They clearly demonstrate their understanding of what it takes at the ground to bring together partners in government, the private sector and the nonprofit world to benefit education.”
The Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award
Environmental education succeeds when it crosses into all aspects of the curriculum. By adding environmental lessons to math classes, English writing assignments or history lessons, students begin to see their relationship to the environment and the ecological systems that sustain life.
Integrating environmental education across academic disciplines can be challenging, yet as many teachers and their students can attest – it’s happening, sometimes with remarkable results.
