Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award Details

Before you begin a nomination, please take a moment to review the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award details below.
Nominations are accepted from anyone on behalf of an outstanding teacher who is integrating environmental education into their curriculum. We highly encourage self-nominations from teachers. If you are nominating a teacher for the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award, the following eligibility criteria apply:
- Nominee must currently be teaching at a public or private school in the United States.
- Nominee must have at least five years of teaching experience.
- Nominee must currently be teaching in the 9-12 grade range.
- Nominee cannot be a current member of the Classroom Earth Teacher Advisory Committee.
- Teachers who have previously received the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award are not eligible to be nominated. This does not include past merit award winners.
- If a nominee’s school has applied for NEEF’s Sustainable Energy Award, he or she may still be nominated for the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award. However, if the nominee’s school wins the Sustainable Energy Award, he or she will no longer be eligible to win the Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award or merit awards.
Each nomination will be evaluated based on the criteria described below.
- Nominee demonstrates a creative, yet replicable approach to advancing environmental education at their school. This may include:
- Experiential learning
- Field trips or place-based learning
- Service learning or community projects
- Overcoming challenges such as limited resources or minimal administrative support
- Nominee has adopted an interdisciplinary or systems thinking approach to integrate environmental education across subject areas beyond science. This may include subjects such as mathematics, language arts or social studies.
- Nominee succeeds in engaging others, such as fellow teachers, school administrators and community members, in their environmental education efforts. This may include:
- Serving as an example and inspiration for other teachers
- Garnering support of the school or district administration
- Passing on knowledge through trainings or presentations
- Involving community partners and parents
- Nominee’s work results in significant student achievement beyond traditional classroom learning. This may include increased interest from students in:
- Environmental issues
- Environmental studies or science majors or post-secondary programs
- Green internships and career paths
- Environmental service learning projects.
- Nominee’s work has led to increased student academic achievement. Possible examples include:
- Standardized test scores
- Grades in various subject areas
- Pre- and Post-Testing
Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award nominations are accepted only through our online system. Follow these steps to register and begin your nomination:
- Click Nominate a Teacher.
- You will be taken to a log in page. If you have not created an account from a previous NEEF grant or award, select Create New Account. If you have created an account with NEEF, skip to step 4.
- Follow the instructions to create your account. It will ask you for User Information and Organization or School Information. For User Information provide your contact information as the account holder. For Organization or School Information, provide the contact information for the teacher being nominated. This will ensure that we have contact information for both the nominator and the nominated. A self-nominating teacher may enter the same contact information in both fields and a Tax ID is not required.
- Upon creating an account, it will take you to your home screen. To start your nomination, click Apply in the menu on the left. You will be taken to a list of NEEF grants and awards. Select Richard C. Bartlett Environmental Education Award 2012.
- Complete the nomination form. Remember:
- You can save the nomination form and return later.
- We recommend you use the Word version of the nomination form to create your narrative and then copy and paste your answers into the online nomination form.
- Pay close attention to character limits. These limits include spaces!
- Once you have completed the nomination form and uploaded all attachments, click Submit Form to complete your nomination. If you do not click Submit Form, you will not have completed your nomination. You will also be directed to a confirmation screen upon submitting.
