The National High School Challenge

Teachers can be one of the biggest influences in a student’s life. They have the power to inspire and encourage students toward healthy and responsible living – and that includes the environment. As a teacher, you can help cultivate a student’s passion for the protection of our environment and planet - and we’d like to help you to do that.

To support you and other teachers around the country in your innovative work to bring environmental education into the classroom, The National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with The Weather Channel, is launching the National High School Challenge. The Challenge is the first phase of our new program, Classroom Earth – a program designed to enhance environmental education in high schools. Through this program, we want to help teachers like you continue to inspire students about environmental issues so that they will have the knowledge to live by, that our planet needs to survive.

If we want an environmentally literate population to address complex environmental issues, it is critical that we provide our students with the base-line environmental knowledge they need to make informed decisions about the environment at home, at school and in their neighborhood.

We’re launching the National High School Challenge to provide teachers with an opportunity to secure as much as $5,000 to $10,000 in funding to bring innovative environmental themes into students’ coursework and incorporate more environmental education into teaching overall!

We’ll make up to 25 awards in different categories:

Course Integration Grants – for teachers who want support inclusion of environmental themes into a single course or across three or more courses.

For more information, visit the Course Integration grants page.

Professional Development Grants – for teachers who want to learn more about environmental education and how to teach about the environment in multiple subject areas and with engaging lessons.

For more information, visit the Professional Development grants page.

Get started now. Submit your proposal by June 20th, 2008.
