Vice President, Development

Position Summary

The National Environmental Education Foundation is seeking an energetic and passionate fundraiser who is eager to align personal interests with a purpose-driven organization. Reporting to the President, the Vice President, Development will serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive institutional (corporate and foundation) revenue development program. In order to be successful, the Vice President, Development should be able to approach their work with strategic visioning, leadership, and fundraising skills while maintaining a bold, creative and collaborative approach.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Strategic Fundraising

Create annual and long-term fundraising goals, plans, budget and strategies in collaboration with President, staff and Board, and lead the implementation of the plans and strategies.

  • Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a comprehensive corporate and foundation development program in order to achieve significant revenue including six and seven figure gifts.
  • Development relationships between persons of influence and NEEF. Solicit influential leaders for financial support, and involvement in Board and other volunteer roles.
  • Monitor progress and evaluate results by developing and maintaining reporting on fundraising performance against budget, report on variances in conjunction with Finance & Administration team.
  • Steward NEEF’s culture of philanthropy where all staff collaborate to achieve NEEF’s development goals and cultivate relationships on behalf of and in support of NEEF.
  • Facilitate on-going trainings and discussions to foster continuous growth towards a strong culture of philanthropy.

Corporate & Foundation Development

Build and maintain meaningful relationships with corporate and foundation contacts to ensure they are experiencing world-class service leading to financial stability and resource management for NEEF.

  • Maintain a robust pipeline of corporate and foundation support that will lead to the solicitation of funds and the generation of revenue opportunities.
  • Partner with board members to identify, cultivate, and steward current and prospective donors.
  • Coordinate the identification and solicitation of potential donors through meeting with the President, Board members, Senior Development Director, and others throughout NEEF and its stakeholders.
  • In concert with the Senior Development Director and Program Directors, prepare pitches, proposals, grant applications and progress reports.
  • Ensure intentional stewardship of current donors, ensuring renewal of funding and building of strong relationships.

Organizational Leadership

Maintain a culture that is in alignment with the NEEF’s mission, core values and organizational strategies.

  • Advance the mission, vision, and goals of NEEF in concert with the President and as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Provide oversight to the Senior Development Director, making the position a vital role in development strategies and coach staff to pursue opportunities that encourage growth and competence in their roles.
  • Ensure an innovative mindset and deliver effective ways to manage systems, processes, and measurements that monitor, project and guide fundraising results and activity.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field both inside and outside the NEEF network.
  • Empower stakeholders with actionable financial information and expertise that maximizes the organization’s impact.
  • Partner with Marketing and Communications to prepare fundraising materials consistent with the NEEF brand, messaging, and marketing strategy.

Qualifications for Consideration

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or business, or comparable experience.
  • Proven fundraising record plus ability to develop and implement fundraising strategies.
  • 12+ years of progressive experience and demonstrated success in cause and program marketing, soliciting major corporate and foundation support, special events, communications, stewardship.
  • 10+ years of management experience with a proven track record of building and mentoring teams.
  • Non-profit leadership and experience in working successfully with board members, C-level executives, and other high-level stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of corporate sustainability, environmental issues, and environmental education are a plus.
  • Experience with Salesforce or another CRM database.

Other Notes

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position and ability to work effectively using a personal computer for long periods of time.
  • Flexibility to travel up to 25-30%*.
    *once pandemic-related travel restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to do so
