Development Intern

Nature of Position

The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF)—the nation’s leading organization in lifelong environmental learning, connecting people to knowledge they use to improve the quality of their lives and the health of the planet—seeks a Development Intern for our Washington, DC office. NEEF has a small development team with two full-time staff members as well as our President. The intern selected will be an integral part of our small and nimble team. While national in scope, NEEF is a small enough organization that you will gain a breadth of knowledge related to the operation of a nonprofit organization. We take pride in being a learning institution and the intern will have many opportunities to interact with a diversity of NEEF staff. This is a three-month, 24 hour (flexible) a week position. Unpaid. Travel stipend provided.

Primary responsibilities include development with research, data entry, and other administrative tasks as needed. You may also have the opportunity to learn the grant writing and reporting process.

Essential Functions

  • Corporate, Foundation, and individual research
  • Maintain up-to-date information in development database (Salesforce)
  • Assist in preparation of development materials for funder meetings, internal newsletter, and other communications as requested
  • Attend webinars and events when needed
  • As requested, participate in development planning meetings

Job Specifications

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with an interest and some knowledge/background in development/fundraising, or relevant nonprofit work experience
  • Possess excellent research, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to organize and manage tracking systems and work on multiple tasks at the same time
  • Database management experience preferred
  • Some professional knowledge/background in environmental or public health issues
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Enjoy working both independently and in collaboration with our NEEF team
  • Possess a strong interest in learning about the nonprofit environment
  • Ability to work on a personal computer for long periods of time
  • Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations; and
  • Contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.


The position is unpaid. Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student and seeking course credit.
