The First Half of 2016 is the Hottest on Record

Have You Heard?

Earth’s average temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average, and 15 of the 16 warmest years on record globally have occurred since 2001.

The global average annual temperature over land and ocean surfaces in 2015 was the warmest on record, continuing a long-term warming trend that has been tracked and predicted by NASA and NOAA scientists. The first 6 months of 2016 are continuing this trend by also being the warmest on record globally.

  • January 2016 was 1.87°F avove the 20th century average of 53.6°F.
  • February 2016 was 2.18°F avove the 20th century average of 53.9°F.
  • March 2016 was 2.20°F avove the 20th century average of 54.9°F.
  • April 2016 was 1.98°F avove the 20th century average of 56.7°F.
  • May 2016 was 1.57°F avove the 20th century average of 58.6°F.
  • June 2016 was 1.62°F avove the 20th century average of 59.9°F.

The warming effect from El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean had an assist in the record-breaking temperatures, but it is ultimately the cumulative effect of the long-term warming trend that resulted in 2015 and the first half of 2016 being the warmest on record globally.
