Salt Smarts

During a typical winter season, 10-20 million tons of road salt are applied to roads all across the United States. Road salt is a major source of chloride in urban waters, and in some areas the levels are high enough to harm wildlife. Use your salt sparingly—wetting the salt with some water before applying it to icy patches can help you use about 30% less, and help keep the salt out of water sources.
