EE What?

EE Week. NEEF’s National Environmental Education Week is the nation's largest celebration of environmental education (also known as EE). EE Week is an opportunity for people to

  • LEARN about the many things happening throughout the country aimed at helping people understand their impact on the environment and their role in ensuring the well-being of the planet and its people.
  • DO something that demonstrates their connection to the environment and shows the endless possibilities of collective impact.
  • SHARE stories and ideas of how EE is leading to a healthier planet, and healthier, happier people—every single day and in a variety of ways.

It’s also a week to celebrate the countless ways EE is changing the way we live our lives and our communities for the better.

What kind of education?

The more we understand about our connection to the environment, the more possibilities we have to influence how those connections impact our health and our planet. That’s where environmental education (EE) comes in. As people understand their relationship to the natural environment—its impact on us and, in turn, our impact on it—they become increasingly aware of how small, individual actions add up to a big difference. EE offers countless opportunities to improve lives, protect the environment, and prepare all Americans to address critical challenges ahead.

When is this happening?

Kicking off on the heels of Earth Day, EE Week 2018 is set for April 23-29. NEEF is inviting everyone (individuals and organizations) to use the week to explore their own connections to the environment, showcase how they are making a difference on behalf of the environment, and share their stories to help others join the charge.

What goes on during EE Week?

NEEF’s EE Week celebrates the many ways people are engaging with their environment—and inspires more companies, government agencies, nonprofits and community organizations, school systems, and people throughout the country to join the party.

To showcase the variety of ways people and organizations participate in EE, NEEF will highlight examples of EE in action in different sectors during each day of the week.

  • Monday, April 23: Government
  • Tuesday, April 24: Community/Nonprofit Groups
  • Wednesday, April 25: Education
  • Thursday, April 26: Business
  • Friday, April 27: Technology
  • Saturday, April 28: Citizen Science
  • Sunday, April 29: Health & Wellness

Does EE only happen during the last week of April?

No. We celebrate the critical need for and benefit of EE during EE Week, but NEEF and its partners want people to engage in EE every day and in every way. From classrooms to board rooms to parks to research stations—and a host of other places—people are learning about their connection to the environment, understanding more about environmental challenges, and building both the capacity and the will to address these challenges. And they are channeling this knowledge into individual actions that, collectively, are creating a healthier planet and healthier, happier people.

Does EE come with guidelines I need to follow?

EE is not prescriptive. Rather than telling people what to do, EE helps people explore the role the environment plays in our daily lives and determine what the environment needs from us to sustain our lives.

Does NEEF have any EE resources that will help me get started?

Yes! With a vision of ensuring that by 2020, 300 million Americans actively use environmental knowledge to ensure the wellbeing of the earth and its people, NEEF offers a host of practical, accessible information aimed at ensuring the environment is ever-present in the daily lives of all Americans.

To encourage people to celebrate EE Week, NEEF is building an online hub of EE toolkits, resources, and other information developed by NEEF and its partners.

Sounds great. Where do I sign up?

There is no need to register, but we do want to hear your story and share it with others. To highlight the different ways people and organizations celebrate EE and what they are doing to inspire others, NEEF is building an online story wall featuring EE stories, pictures, and short videos submitted by schools, organizations, businesses, professional environmental educators and people who carry out EE as their vocation as well as individuals in all walks of life who are learning about the environment, converting that knowledge to responsible action on behalf of the environment, and sharing these lessons with others.

NEEF also encourages people to share their EE stories and activities through social media and tagging them with #EEWeek2018 and #EEinAction.

If I celebrate EE and share my story, what do I win?

By celebrating and sharing the simple ways people are exploring and expanding their connections to the environment, you will become part of a community of individuals and organizations dedicated to taking well-informed action on behalf of the environment.

Together, we can use EE to improve lives and build a brighter future for our kids, and our children’s kids. And that is a win for all of us.

How much does this cost?

There is nothing to join and nothing to pay. All NEEF asks is that you find ways to engage in and celebrate EE every day and in every possible way.

Through the support of its partners, including EE Week corporate partner Samsung Electronics America, Inc., NEEF is creating a national movement to encourage more people to be part of EE and learn more, do more, and share more.
