US Forest Service Grant for National Public Lands Day

The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) and U.S. Forest Service are offering a total of $15,000 in grant funds for U.S. Forest Service partners who support Forest Service sponsored National Public Lands Day (NPLD) projects. The goal of NPLD is to improve the quality of public lands and to educate the public about natural resource issues and stewardship.

The 23rd annual National Public Lands Day will be held September 24, 2016.  Applicants can request up to $750.  Money is limited, so only ask for what you need.  All that apply may not be funded.


  • Applicant must be a Forest Service partner that is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or working through a fiscal agent
  • Project must occur on Forest Service managed land or project must be affiliated with the Forest Service
  • Applicant must register their project with the Forest Service or via (check with your Forest Service contact at as they may have already registered your project)
  • Project must be completed between September 1 and October 10, 2016


The below criteria are the basis for reviewing grants and scoring applications. Successful applications will:

  • Describe a project that will engage the public through conservation education and/or stewardship of public lands, and will be completed between September 1 and Octber 10, 2016.
  • Demonstrate importance of project.
  • Explain how the project will be documented and publicized.
  • Show how grant funds will be spent to cover the costs of the project. Funds may be used for tools, proper personal protective equipment and educational materials for enhancements to land and surroundings used by the public. Food and giveaways are not to be a significant budget item for awarded funds.

*Additional consideration will be given to projects supporting Every Kid in a Park

Grantee Requirements

Awarded sites are required to submit an evaluation to their Forest Service contact including:

  • Site improvements
  • Knowledge gained by public participants
  • Detailed description of accomplishments
  • How funds were spent
  • Number and demographic of engaged public participants
  • Pictures of the event with releases are highly encouraged!


Application Deadline: August 30, 2016 (extended deadline)

Awarded: Beginning of September

National Public Lands Day: September 24, 2016

Projects Completed By: October 10, 2016

Evaluation Deadline: November 11, 2016


Applications are only accepted through NEEF’s online system.  Follow these steps to apply:

1. Log in or create an account in our online system.  (This link will take you to the home screen). 

2. To start your application, click Apply on the left hand column.  You will see a box to type in an Access Code on the right hand side of the screen.  Type NPLD and press enter.  The U.S. Forest Service NPLD Grant will appear.  Select it to begin your application. 

3. Once you have completed the application, click Submit Form.  If you do not click Submit Form, you will not have applied.  You will be directed to a confirmation screen upon submitting.
