2016 National Public Lands Day Volunteer Event - Piney Branch

Join Rock Creek Conservancy and the National Park Service to celebrate National Public Lands Day, a day to to connect people to public lands in their community, inspire environmental stewardship, and encourage use of public lands for education, recreation, and general health. Volunteers will help support Washington DC's National Park for everyone to enjoy.

Event Activity: Volunteers will remove invasive plants, cleanup trash, and clear debris from the Piney Branch Tributary of Rock Creek Park. Tools, gloves, and training on how to identify and cut invasives will be provided. This event is suitable for ages 8 and up. SSL hours can be earned by middle and high school students.

When: Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Location: Volunteers will meet at Picnic Area 29 in the Piney Branch section of Rock Creek Park. The closest intersection is 17th Street and Piney Branch Parkway NW, Washington, D.C. 20011.

Due to the Beach Drive Rehabilitation Project parts of Piney Branch Parkway and Beach Drive will be closed to cars. Volunteers are encouraged to take Klingle Rd to Park Rd to 17th Street to enter the park area. Street parking near the picnic pavilion will also not be allowed. Volunteers are enouraged to park in the surrounding neighborhood and walk to the site. More details will follow in the email sent to all volunteer signups the day before the activity.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear sturdy boots or sneakers, no sandals. We recommend long pants and sleeves to prevent contact with poison ivy.

What to Bring: Bring water. Tools and gloves will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tools and gloves if you have them.
