AmeriCorps National Day of Service Mini BioBlitz 2018

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation will be hosting an AmeriCorps National Day of Service Mini BioBlitz at Davis Creek Regional Park to record biodiversity, engage community members in environmental education, and promote healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship. This Mini BioBlitz will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m on May 26th and will be part of Washoe County’s Springtime Story Stroll. This event will be during the national celebration of innovation in libraries. Local experts, including the Nevada State Entomologist, will teach participants about species identification the importance of biodiversity on environmental health utilizing a mobile microscope and other professional scientific equipment. Parks Foundation staff will also educate participants about the interconnectedness of human health and forest health through an introductory lesson and informational handouts.

Data will be recorded using notes and photos taken by community volunteers and photos can be uploaded to the Parks Foundation Mini BioBlitz website. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation will provide field guides, pictures, and tools such as aspirators, magnifying glasses, and forceps to allow citizens at all levels of comfortability to participate, collect, and identify the changing ecology of our local parks. We will also provide bags and trash picker kits for park clean-up.
