Event details

The American Littoral Society will be constructing jute prisms to be incorporated into Thompsons Beach Reef. The projects build date is anticipated for October 18, 2025. Over the course of the next few weeks, the Society will be utilizing volunteers and students from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (M.A.S.T., Sandy Hook, NJ) to construct jute prisms, jute fiber that has been coated with concrete and hardened into triangular prism forms. The prisms will be filled with shell and used to construct Thompsons Beach Reef, during the Thompsons Beach Reef Shellabration tentatively scheduled for 10/18/2025. This project focuses on protecting important habitat for horseshoe crabs and migratory shorebirds while creating habitat for marine species. Through incorporating and monitoring these jute prisms, the project will highlight the applicability and performance of plastic alternative materials in reef construction.
