Event details

Approximately 5 acres of a depleted borrow pit will be selected to be targeted to be planted with over 800 potted plants ranging in size form 1 gallon containers, up to 15 gallon containers. Water absorbing soil amendments will be added to the planting spots to help establish the species that we put in the ground in the event of dryer weather. Afterward, a native seed mix that contains the species needed for monarch butterfly spawning will be spread over the site to establish the native flowers and plants that monarchs favor. Participants will register through our volunteer coordinator on Eglin via an announcement email.

On the first day, volunteers will help unload the truck and start placing plants in the right spots for where they will be planted the second day. If we end up having some time left over the first day before our time is up at the event we will start planting some of the plants in advance.

On the second day, we will focus mainly on planting the potted plants. Some will also be in charge of mixing the soil hydration amendment and going around to all of the holes where the plants are going to go to add the amendment in to the bottom of the pit. Another volunteer will get the native plant seed and then walk around the site spreading it to the best of their ability. If all goes according to plan then we should have all the work done by the end of the second day.
