On Saturday, September 27, volunteers will assist with removing trash and invasive plants from Helen Cooper Floyd Park to restore wildlife habitat and improve outdoor recreation access. This will be the first of two NPLD events at Helen Cooper Floyd Park. The second event will involve establishing native plants, installing educational signage, and installing monofilament recycling bins with local Scouts and ROTC groups.
This event will run from 07:30 to 11:00 am. A quick safety briefing and educational talk on invasive plant species will be given to volunteers at the start of the event at 07:30 am. Zones will be set up for volunteers to assist with trash removal throughout the 33-acre park. Licensed herbicide applicators will be present to assist volunteers with invasive plant removal and provide instructions for hand-pulling and manual removal of the plants.
We will supply trash bags and nitrile gloves, along with a limited number of trash grabbers, work gloves, and gardening tools. Please feel free to bring your own supplies. We highly encourage long pants and close-toed shoes to provide safety against cactus, rough terrain, and trash.
To register for the event, please email mayportturtles@gmail.com with your contact information, number of volunteers attending, and if you would prefer to pick up trash or remove invasive plants. We will send an email to registered volunteers with more information closer to the event date. Walk-ups are also welcome.
