National Public Lands Day Volunteer Project – Rainbow Canyon Interpretive Site

Volunteers will assist the BLM Cody Field Office with improvements to the Rainbow Canyon Interpretive Site to enhance visitor access, safety, and accessibility.

Project work will include:

  • Constructing an accessible trail using 6-inch by 6-inch pressure-treated timbers to define and retain the trail edges.
  • Anchoring the timbers with 5/8-inch steel reinforcing bar (rebar) to provide long-term stability.
  • Installing landscape fabric beneath the trail surface to reduce weed growth and minimize future maintenance.
  • Placing and compacting crusher fine gravel to create a firm, stable, and durable walking surface that improves accessibility.
  • Constructing a small elevated pedestrian boardwalk over a creek crossing using 6-inch by 6-inch pressure-treated timber framing and 2-inch by 6-inch decking, providing safe pedestrian access while minimizing impacts to the drainage.
  • Installing a permanent shade shelter at the existing picnic area. Shelter posts will be secured in concrete footings in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Removing encroaching vegetation along the trail corridor and around the recreation site to improve visitor access, visibility, and overall site appearance.

These improvements will increase accessibility, enhance visitor safety and comfort, reduce long-term maintenance requirements, and provide a more sustainable recreation experience while protecting the surrounding natural resources.
