Aravaipa Creek Invasive Vinca Removal 2026
The BLM will host a invasive species removal to benefit the unique habitat at Aravaipa Creek. The target species for removal is vinca, a invasive weed that smothers and crowds out native riparian plants. The location will be near the East Aravaipa Trailhead at Bear Canyon. There is a parcel of BLM managed land that contains a section of the creek. BLM will supply tool, supplies, drinks, and a light lunch for volunteers.

This volunteer event will involve manual removal using hand tools only.

The BLM is working to remove the invasive plant species Bigleaf periwinkle (Vinca major) from Aravaipa Canyon.
Bigleaf periwinkle spreads rapidly, forming dense mats that crowd out native vegetation. It thrives in shaded, warm canyon environments typical of the Southwest. If left unmanaged, it can disrupt natural water flow and reduce native plant diversity.

Removing this invasive species will support the recovery of native and naturalized plants, improving biodiversity and overall ecosystem health. For questions on the event, reach out to the Safford Field Office at 928-348-4400 and ask to speak with Lamoni Mora or Andrew Boline.
