Absaroka Fence Initiative – Oregon Basin Divisional Fence Project

The Absaroka Fence Initiative (AFI) brings together volunteers, willing landowners, agencies, and conservation partners to improve fence functionality for both wildlife and livestock. Through this collaborative effort, partners work to retrofit, remove, or replace problematic sections of fence that create barriers to wildlife movement while maintaining the effectiveness of livestock management.

Fences are an essential part of our working landscapes, but they can also pose significant challenges for wildlife. By combining the expertise, resources, and dedication of our partners and volunteers, AFI helps improve habitat connectivity by modifying or removing fences that impede wildlife movement, while ensuring fences continue to meet the needs of landowners and livestock operations.

This Year's Project

This year's project will focus on modifying the Oregon Basin Divisional Fence, a high-priority segment identified for improvements to benefit pronghorn movement. Volunteers will work together to retrofit sections of the existing fence, making it more wildlife-friendly while maintaining its intended function for livestock management. These improvements will help pronghorn and other wildlife move more safely across the landscape and support long-term habitat connectivity.

What to Bring

Please come prepared for a day of outdoor work:

Sturdy work boots or shoes

Long-sleeved shirt and long pants

Work gloves

Gaiters (recommended for protection in sagebrush)

Refillable water bottle(s)

If you have your own fencing tools, feel free to bring them. A variety of tools will also be provided for volunteers.
