This event will include both Natural and Cultural Resources activities. Natural Resources activities include care for two endangered plant areas by removing invasive plants, installing weed barriers, and planting native plants.  These efforts will provide the endangered plants with reduced competition, fewer pests, lower risk of wildfire, and a community of native plants to support the microhabitat.  Endangered plants include ʻihiʻihi (Marsilea villosa), a unique native fern growing in the lowlands and a tall native female tree, mēhamehame (Flueggea neowawraea). Cultural resources include removing invasive vegetation at Nioiula Heiau, an ancient Hawaiian temple, and stabilizing the walls. Navy archaeologists will discuss the settlement patterns of Lualualei and the relationship of this site in the valley,  Native Hawaiian practitioners will discuss the cultural significance of this site with volunteers.
