BLM Price Field Office – September 2026 Volunteer Trail Projects

The BLM Price Field Office will be hosting several volunteer trail maintenance projects throughout September 2026, offering opportunities to support both motorized and non‑motorized trails across public lands. These projects are a great way for community members, recreation enthusiasts, and stewardship‑minded visitors to give back to the landscapes they enjoy.

Volunteers will help improve trail sustainability, protect natural and cultural resources, and enhance recreation experiences for future users. Project dates, meeting locations, and specific work plans will vary throughout the month. For the most accurate and up‑to‑date information on which days crews will be working—and when and where to meet—please contact the BLM Price Field Office at 435‑636‑3600.

What to Expect as a Volunteer

Trail projects may include hiking or riding to project sites, using hand tools, and working outdoors in variable weather conditions. Projects are designed so volunteers of many experience levels can contribute.

Volunteers must provide their own transportation, as project locations can be remote and dispersed. In addition, volunteers are responsible for bringing their own personal supplies, including: Adequate water for the full duration of the project, Food and snacks, Weather protection such as hats, sunscreen, long sleeves, and jackets. Any personal medications or other items needed throughout the day.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

To ensure safety, volunteers are required to wear: Sturdy, closed‑toe boots suitable for uneven terrain, Long pants/shirts, Work gloves, Safety Glasses, and a helmet, if the project involves riding a bike or OHV.

Depending on the specific activity, additional PPE may be recommended before the project date.

Examples of Motorized Trail Projects

Motorized trail work typically supports OHV (Off‑Highway Vehicle) recreation areas and may include:

Installing or repairing route signage

Stabilizing eroded segments of trail

Rehabilitating unauthorized user‑created routes

Improving drainage features to prevent washouts

Brushing trail corridors for safe OHV passage

Assisting with staging‑area cleanups or boundary reinforcement

Examples of Non‑Motorized Trail Projects

Non‑motorized trail work often supports hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, such as:

Removing rocks, debris, and vegetation encroachment

Repairing tread damage or building rock‑armored features

Improving switchbacks or trail reroutes for sustainability

Constructing or maintaining trail features like steps or water bars

Trailhead improvements, including signs, kiosks, or fencing updates

About the San Rafael Swell Recreation Area

The San Rafael Swell is one of Utah’s most iconic and rugged landscapes—known for deep slot canyons, sweeping mesas, multi‑colored sandstone formations, and expansive desert vistas. This region offers diverse recreation opportunities, including hiking, canyoneering, mountain biking, OHV riding, climbing, and camping.

The Swell contains a mixture of designated trails, wilderness areas, historic and cultural sites, and important wildlife habitat. Its remote character and spectacular geology make it a premier destination for adventurers seeking open space, scenic exploration, and solitude.
