Today, the tranquil fields of the Brawner Farm belie the horror and death experienced by soldiers in a harrowing fight on August 28th, 1862, where the chance of getting shot was one in three. For many in the local community, the Brawner Farm is a place to hike, walk their dogs, experience some peace, and reflect. For all that know the history, it is hallowed ground.
Removing invasive species from the Brawner Farm will aid the park in its fight to control them. As a part of the event, park interns will present short talks about invasive species in the park, how they impact the environment, and what steps the park takes to try and control them. Any invasives removed will then be used to create brush piles that can be used as habitat by bobwhite quail, turning something harmful into something useful for the environment. In turn, the removal of these invasives will also help preserve the Brawner Farm as a lasting tribute to those who gave their lives fighting there in 1862.
