Project Description

As part of the Freedom250 and National Public Lands Day events on September 19, 2026, volunteers will complete a series of beautification and maintenance projects at the King Range National Conservation Area that enhance visitor facilities, improve safety, and foster stewardship of America's public lands.

The primary project will complete the restroom beautification initiative at Mal Coombs Park, which began in June 2026 through the King Range Artist in Residence program. While interpretive murals transformed the restroom interior, the final phase will apply a durable, non-slip floor coating to improve visitor safety and complete the facility improvements.

Volunteers will also repaint restroom exteriors at Black Sands Beach and repaint kiosks and trash receptacles throughout the Mal Coombs Park and Black Sands Beach day use areas. These improvements will cover graffiti, restore the appearance of public infrastructure, and create a cohesive, welcoming aesthetic across the two heavily visited recreation sites.

The project supports the Bureau of Land Management's goals of maintaining high-quality recreation facilities, protecting public investments, and engaging communities in the stewardship of public lands. By leveraging volunteer participation during Freedom250 and National Public Lands Day, the project will improve visitor experiences, reduce future maintenance needs, and demonstrate the lasting value of community partnerships in caring for the King Range National Conservation Area.
