Site Steward Volunteer Event
Volunteers will serve as a Site Steward as part of the 2025 National Public Lands Day event hosted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Vale District, Malheur Field Office (MFO). Site Stewards will monitor archaeological and cultural site conditions under the guidance and support of Vale District archaeologists. Site Stewards will locate known archaeological/cultural sites, photograph and document current site conditions and report findings back to MFO.

Event details
  • As a group, locate known archaeological/cultural sites based on provided maps and/or coordinates.
  • Examine the site area by walking over/around the site as much as possible to observe current site conditions.
  • Document any active ground disturbance or threats to the site. Examples include:
    • foot traffic
    • vehicle traffic
    • evidence of camping
    • trash
    • collector’s piles
    • vegetation removal
    • vandalism or graffiti
    • natural deterioration
  • Complete a monitoring form that will be turned in to the field office archaeologists.
