Event details

Celebrate National Public Lands Day and be a steward of the White Mountains National Recreation Area! Learn about riparian habitat rehabilitation and restoration revegetation techniques. Collect and plant native Alaskan willow stakes and native riparian plant seeds to help rehabilitate the scars of mining in the Nome Creek Floodplain.  If you have any questions, please contact event organizers prior to the event! Meet at: Nome Creek Bridge. Coordinates: 65.340668, -146.713544. 

It is recommended that participants meet event organizers at the US Creek Road BLM Pullout (Steese Highway MP 57, just past Davidson Ditch Access) from 9:00-9:30 AM if they are unsure on how to get to the event location. At 9:30 AM, event organizers and participants will drive up US Creek Road towards the Nome Creek Bridge. It is about an eight-mile drive on an uphill, gravel road.

Work

Registration will begin around 10:00 a.m. at the Nome Creek Bridge.  Participants will divide into work groups to collect native willow stakes and riparian plant seeds and plant them in the Nome Creek Floodplain. Volunteers should come prepared for any kind of weather, with warm clothing, hats, rain gear, sturdy boots, and work gloves.  Volunteers should also bring water, snacks, and a lunch.

Itinerary

Participants will meet event leaders at the Nome Creek Bridge at 10:00 a.m. The event will begin with brief presentations from BLM staff on riparian restoration, revegetation techniques and responsible recreation, followed by a short Q&A session. Participants will then divide into work groups of choice, led and instructed by event staff, to collect native riparian plant seeds and willow stakes in pre-selected source areas. Collected seeds and willow stakes will be planted by participant work groups in select areas in need of revegetation. The day is expected to conclude in the midafternoon.
