SunWise Tool Kit

The SunWise Tool Kit contains cross-curricular classroom lessons that are aligned with national educational standards for K-8 learning levels. These lessons consist of a variety of fun, developmentally-appropriate activities that combine education about sun protection and the environment with other aspects of learning.

  • Introduction
    Introduction to the problem of overexposure to the sun, and the SunWise Program, Tool Kit, Recognition Awards, and Program Workshops. This section is intended for: educators.
  • How to Use the SunWise Tool Kit
    Explains how to use the different sections and activities included in the SunWise Tool Kit. National educational standards for health, physical education, English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are presented. This section is intended for: educators.
  • Grades K-2
    Activities designed to engage students while also conveying a sun safety message. These activities are for students who are beginning to read and write, learning introductory scientific concepts, and performing simple mathematics. These activities are intended for: students in grades K-2, and their educators.
  • Grades 3-5
    Activities designed to engage students while also conveying a sun safety message. These activities are for students who are able to read and write more fluently, are familiar with scientific concepts, and are performing more complicated mathematics. These activities are intended for: students in grades 3-5, and their educators.
  • Grades 6-8
    Activities designed to engage students while also conveying a sun safety message. These activities are for students who are able to read and write fluently, have worked with scientific processes, and are performing complicated mathematics. These activities are intended for: students in grades 6-8, and their educators.
  • UV Meter
    Activities designed to be implemented with a hand-held UV meter. Students will learn about the science of UV radiation, the UV Index, and how to block UV rays. These activities are designed for: students in grades 3-8 and their educators.
  • Policy Information
    Provides guidance for making changes outside the classroom. Information and tools are provided on how to become a SunWise school, including evaluating your school, developing school sun safety policies, and communicating with parents and community members. This section is intended for: educators and administrators.

    Resources for further information regarding sun safety and UV-related health effects. These resources are intended for: educators.
  • SunWisdom
    Contains fact sheets and other materials providing teachers with the background information needed to easily and thoroughly implement the SunWise Program. This section is intended for: educators.
  • Materials
    Contains activity materials such as a Certificate of SunWisdom, the UV Index chart, and Action Steps for Sun Protection. These materials are intended for: educators.
